 Organization

Biographical

The Sisters of Charity of the Blessed Virgin Mary (BVM), founded in 1833 in Philadelphia by Irish woman Mary Frances Clarke, is a community of Catholic women who have embraced a life dedicated to prayer, service, and community. Each member responds to a personal call from God, choosing to commit themselves to making a difference in the world.

At the heart of their mission is a desire to help others experience freedom, grounded in their core values of freedom, education, charity, and justice. BVMs actively engage with critical social issues, especially those affecting women and children. Many of the sisters work as educators, pastoral ministers, counselors, and advocates for the elderly and immigrants. Others focus on social services, healthcare, and prayer ministry.

The Sisters are committed to collaborating with others in the pursuit of justice and caring for our planet, always striving to bring about positive change for those in need.
