Sisters of St. Agnes (1858-) (Fond du Lac, WI)

 Organization

Biographical

The Sisters of St. Agnes congregation was founded in Barton, Wisconsin, on August 12, 1858, by Father Caspar Rehrl, an Austrian missionary. Initially facing great hardships, the community was revitalized in 1863 when Mary Hazotte became its leader at just 17 years old. Mother Agnes Hazotte, who led until her death in 1905, guided the group through significant milestones, including their move to Fond du Lac in 1870 and the establishment of Leo House in New York City for German Catholic immigrants in 1889. Under the spiritual direction of Father Francis Haas, they revised their rules and opened St. Agnes Hospital in 1896. As of 2023, over 125 vowed members continue the congregation’s mission of service in the U.S. and Nicaragua.
