O'Neal, Sister Mary Athanasius (Margaret), 1830-1910

Biographical

Sister Mary Athanasius ( Margaret O'Neill)* was born in County Cork, Ireland in 1829 (or 1830?}, the daughter of Richard O'Neil and Bridget Moore. She entered the Congregation December 5, 1855 at Saint Mary's, Notre Dame Indiana, received the Habit July 18, 1856, and made Final Profession August 15, 1859 at Saint Mary's, Notre Dame, Indiana. She died at Saint Mary's Convent, Notre Dame, Indiana, April 27, 1910 and is interred at Our Lady of Peace Cemetery, Saint Mary's, Notre Dame, Indiana.[O'Neill occurs also as O'Neil in our records]Fifty of her 53 years of service were in Indiana. She served at Notre Dame, Michigan City, Renssalaer, and South Bend, Indiana. She also served one year in Washington, D.C. and two years in Mound City, Illinois. Sister served in a variety of ministries: infirmarian, two years as a nurse in military service during the Civil War, housework, refectories, portress, care of boarders' clothes room/sewing, directress, and pupils' refectories.
