Biographical
Sister Margaret Mary Modde, OSF (1921-2011), served as a canonical consultant, applying her expertise to healthcare systems, facilities, and sponsoring congregations in the Catholic health ministry.
Born Mary Romanus Modde, she became a Sister of St. Francis in 1941. Initially a teacher, she joined Mercy Hospital's business office in Portsmouth, Ohio, in 1953. In the 1960s, she held roles at her congregation's motherhouse, Assisi Heights, Rochester.
From 1970 to 1974, she was executive director of the National Sisters Vocation Conference. After earning a doctorate in canon law in 1977, she served as a canonical consultant to religious experts and a liaison among congregations worldwide. She was also a canonist and, in the late 1980s, an associate vice president at CHA.
Between 1989 and 2008, she advised McDermott, Will and Emery law firm on mergers, sales, and reorganizations for Catholic health systems, including Catholic Health Partners, Catholic Healthcare West, Provena Health, and Sisters of Mercy Health System. She also advised on restructuring sponsoring congregations.
