Staniukynas, Reverend Anthony, 1865-1918
Biographical
Reverend Anthony Staniukynas (1865–1918) was a distinguished Lithuanian-American Catholic priest known for his extensive education. He played a key role as the spiritual mentor and co-founders of the Sisters of St. Casimir, a well-known religious order for women created to serve Lithuanian immigrant communities in the U.S. Originally named Antanas Staniukynas, he was born in Suvalkai, Lithuania, and studied in Rome and Jerusalem, earning a Doctor of Theology degree. In 1904, he moved to the U.S. to serve as a pastor in Mt. Carmel, Pennsylvania. There, he provided essential support for the establishment of the Sisters of St. Casimir. He later relocated to Chicago in 1909 to help establish the order's first convent and motherhouse. His impact endures in Chicago's religious history, particularly in preserving Lithuanian heritage and education, as noted in sources like the Foreign Language Press Survey, with his legacy continuing through the work of the order.
